The Caribbean Industrial Research Institute (CARIRI) successfully hosted a comprehensive two-day Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Training programme on June 11–12, 2026, bringing together participants from both the public and private sectors, as well as regional representatives from Antigua and Jamaica.
The training programme was designed to strengthen technical knowledge and operational capacity in wastewater management, with a focus on plant operations, maintenance, health and safety, environmental management and regulatory compliance.
Participants engaged in practical and interactive sessions covering a wide range of topics including:
- Fundamentals of wastewater treatment
- Microbiological activity and testing
- Plant and equipment maintenance
- Troubleshooting wastewater treatment systems
- Administrative records and preventative maintenance
- Health, safety and environmental considerations in wastewater operations
The programme also addressed critical operational components such as sedimentation, oil removal, pH adjustment, coagulation, disinfection systems and laboratory procedures.
CARIRI’s training initiative reflects the Institute’s continued commitment to building regional capacity and supporting sustainable environmental practices throughout the Caribbean. The participation of regional attendees from Antigua and Jamaica highlighted the growing importance of collaborative approaches to wastewater management and environmental stewardship across the region.
Speaking on the significance of the training, CARIRI emphasized the need for ongoing technical development and knowledge sharing to ensure wastewater treatment facilities operate efficiently, safely and in compliance with environmental standards.
The training further provided participants with the opportunity to network, exchange experiences and discuss common operational challenges faced within the wastewater management sector.
