CARIRI’s Role
CARIRI’s role in the two-year project, which started in May 2013, is to assist with identification of projects from the Caribbean with relevance to the CCIC’s objectives and which will become part of the co-operation programme. We will also be responsible for disseminating information coming out of the project’s conferences and symposia.
Why CCIC?
The environment has been at the centre of co-operation between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean, since the 1st EU-LAC Summit and the creation of a Strategic Partnership in 1999. Numerous projects and initiatives have been implemented with European and Latin American funding to help prevent and mitigate climate change, loss of biodiversity, natural hazards, and desertification; encourage the sustainable management of raw materials; and improve water and waste management.
However, the impact of these projects tends to be narrow and isolated. Their real value, and potential national and transnational impact, are not being realised. CCIC’s goal is to address this shortcoming and to maximize the value of these existing initiatives, by providing a framework for development into the future.
How will the CCIC Achieve Its Goals?
The CCIC will help improve the dissemination and exploitation of research results in the areas of climate change, resource efficiency and raw material usage. This will be achieved through:
- Networking and twinning of existing multilateral and bilateral projects funded by different sources
- Development of efficient interaction schemes between science, industry and users
- Elaboration of future research priorities and joint activities
